An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was interested in starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away told my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
